[ This is not how Kaz expected his day to start. Big Boss' words are as restrained as ever, but he can practically sense how pleased he is about this. ]
You serious? Where'd it come from? Was there something inside?
Hey, uh, Miller? We talked during the whole... Thing a few weeks ago, about my friend who disappeared, and I told you I'd give you an update if anything changes.
Well, he's uh... He's back. Somehow.
[And it's probably the first really good thing to happen here, as far as Chris is concerned.]
[ It's not like Miller has real friends here, the sort of people who would call him out of the blue, so he's kind of surprised when he finds the message on his phone.
As it turns out, it's that Chris person he'd texted with during Fear's last event. This is his first time seeing the guy's face, and he's younger than expected. Huh.
Kaz is quick to send a response, nodding in greeting as his phone starts transmitting. ]
Well, I'm glad to hear he's okay. What happened to him?
We don't know exactly, he just like, showed up in the arena with everyone else. Apparently he doesn't remember anything after disappearing before waking up there.
[Which is... Weird and a little worrying, but he's back and okay and that's what's most important.]
So as far as he's concerned, one minute he was going about his day and the next minute he was back in the arena? With no sense of time having passed?
[ That's definitely worrying. Almost like he'd been put into an induced coma for the time he was gone, then woken up again. Kaz worries at his lip as he considers the implications of that. Could it happen to any of them? ]
Yeah, as far I understand. I mean if it weren't like, two months I'd think he hit his head or something, but...
[There's no way something could've happened to Mike back during the blizzard that he only just now recovered from, not to mention done so and somehow ended up in the arena as well.]
That's too much time to just lose with no explanation.
[ Miller shakes his head to himself, brow knit with concern. Not necessarily because he cares about Chris' friend specifically, but it leads him to wonder, what's really going on here? ]
You should keep an eye on him. Make sure he doesn't exhibit any strange symptoms. [ After the mess with the vocal chord parasites, Kaz has come out a little more paranoid than before. ] And see if you can get a hold of one of the gods and get some answers out of them. This isn't the sort of thing you just brush off.
[He definitely agrees with that sentiment, but the next comment causes him some concern and his expression grows more serious.]
Strange symptoms like what?
[The last time he'd been told to watch for something like that had been from Mike himself, about Emily possibly turning into a wendigo. That had turned out to be unfounded entirely, so he's hesitant about the whole idea of observing too carefully and possibly jumping to any conclusions.
He's also really hesitant about that last idea.]
I uh... Hope didn't answer much of anything the last time I asked him about anything. Fear might talk to me, but...
[He's really kind of terrified of Fear, even if he thinks he'll get a better answer out of him than he would out of Hope.]
[ Kaz shakes his head, as he doesn't have a very good answer to that question. ]
I'm not sure. Just... anything that seems off. We have no idea what might have been done to him in that time that he was gone, is all I'm saying.
[ If they're lucky, it will be nothing. Snake had died and there have yet to be any ill effects that either of them have noticed, after all. It still smacks Kaz as too good to be true, though. ]
I can try to track one of them down, if you're not comfortable with it.
[ Chris is still just a kid, after all. Miller doesn't want to put too much pressure on him. ]
[He's quiet a few moments, gazing off camera in thought, but then nods.]
Okay. I'll just keep an eye out.
[Just in case, because there are so many things that could've happened.
At the offer he goes quiet again, thinking it over, totally uncertain. One on hand he's really nervous about talking to Fear, mostly out of concern he'll say something wrong and upset the god; on the other, he knows the most about this situation and is relatively familiar with talking to the gods, and it's wrong to make Miller take the risk instead.]
No it's... I can do it. I'll let you know if I find out anything useful.
[ Seeing how Miller hasn't had to encounter any of the gods in person, he doesn't find himself that intimidated by them. Maybe it would be a different story otherwise, but the fact that they keep interactions to the phone network instills a false sense of security.
Though it does make him wonder if anyone has actually seen these gods with their own eyes. It seems a little fishy. ]

[but OBVIOUSLY the box is the most important part. don't ask what else was in there; he's still contemplating the stress ball like it might bite him.]

[ There's no reason to play dumb. Kaz knows what Snake wants to do with it. ]

[nothing like those boxes MSF developed]

So when it comes to not taking anything from the gods, I guess a cardboard box is the exception?

[he's actually not sorry at all. and also really pleased that you ate his present.....]

It is kind of eerie, though. It means that they know more about us than we realized. Even something as trivial as that...
[ He may be goading him a little. ]
no subject
It's not trivial.
[IT'S WORKING]
But yeah, seems that way.

Too bad there isn't much reason for you to use that box here.
[ Although Kaz assumes that Big Boss will somehow fashion a reason. ]

[he loves this box okay]

[He gives kind of an awkward wave goodbye, and disconnects. Time to go talk to a god.]
